The Food Bank for Central & Northeast Mo
Abbreviated Statement (148 words out of 150) The Buddy Pack program is dedicated to improving the health and education of a child who needs food, but the program is limited by resources. Buddy Packs serve as a lifeline between the student, teacher and school. Food alleviates absenteeism and disruptive behavior. If the child can stay in school, he or she has a chance to learn and break the poverty cycle. These children are emotionally affected, focusing on not having enough to eat at home. They bear physical scars, their immune systems do not develop properly and they are more likely to be sick. Their reaction times are slower, and they display muscle weakness and problems with organ function. Teachers know first-hand which students are eating at home and which ones are missing meals and struggling with hunger issues. No child should be distracted from learning because of hunger and poverty.
