United Way of West Central Mississippi
In 2011, the graduation rate for Warren County was a dismally low 56.2% compared to the state average of 73.7% Students who have not mastered the skill of reading before exiting the 3rd grade are more likely to struggle throughout their educational career, while a large percentage do not even graduate. The United Way of West Central Mississippi worked together with several community partners to implement a grade level reading program in hopes to improve the grade level reading of students exiting 3rd grade. During the 2014/2015 academic school year, 791 third grade students received a free book each quarter of the school year. Seventy-nine community leaders entered thirteen elementary schools in the Vicksburg Warren School District to share their passion for reading. In May of 2015, 82% of our 3rd grade students passed the MKAS2 Assessment, indicating reading mastery at the 3rd grade level.
